This paper discusses 13 Environmental ManagementrnScience Program (EMSP) funded basic research projectsrnthat use geophysical imaging techniques applicable tornvadose zone characterization at the Idaho NationalrnEngineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL).rnThe INEEL seeks to harvest the results of the EMSPrnresearch and, integrating them with the INEEL’srnSubsurface Science Initiative, apply them torncharacterization of the INEEL waste burial grounds.rnCharacterization of the subsurface environment is arnnecessary precursor to developing isolation, stabilization,rnand treatment strategies, since the subsurface propertiesrncoupled with physicochemical and biological processesrnaffect contaminant fate and transport. The EMSPrnresearch identified herein may lead to significantrnimprovements in state-of-the-art geophysical imaging ofrnthe shallow subsurface at the INEEL. This knowledge isrnnecessary to protect groundwater supplies for futurerngenerations.
