Boron Carbide (B_4C) is manufactured by carbothermal process in a heat resistance furnace using boric acid and petroleum coke as raw materials Between 15 to 20 % of the charge is converted in to boron carbide during the process No published attempt has been made to optimize the process using mathematical model Therefore, a mathematical model has been developed for the process, Transient non-linear differential equations in cylindrical coordinate have been formulated for heat transfer and fraction reacted. These equations in their non-dimensional form have been solved using Finite Volume Method and Implicit Scheme Some simplified assumptions have been made as a first attempt to solve the problem Results obtained from the computer simulation seem to be realistic. Effect of few parameters on the process has been studied.
