In this study the feasibility of an adsorption barrier made of organic matter rich material on the border of sediment deposits is tested. The barrier must prevent in the long term the diffusion of persistent organic contaminants into the surroundings of the deposit. It is possible to construct such an organic barrier on the slope (1:4) of a deep (to 40 m) underwater deposit with a mixture of granular active coal and sand or with high organic clay. However, the granular active coal does not show enough sorption capacity to make a cost efficient barrier. Clay mixed with high organic material can be used in the form of clay cakes or clay mats. A pilot test has to reproduce the present results.
