This paper addresses the change of quality of reclamation lands with time in seafront area through a series of 2D elasto-viscoplastic soil/water coupled finite element simulations considering the construction sequence of reclamation works. Particularly, occurrence of long-term non-uniform settlement after completion of reclamation works on the seabed is discussed. It is shown that the long-term settlement of the man-made island with time is strongly influenced by the choice of construction sequence of reclamation works. And also the development of excess pore water pressures in not only soft holocene clay layers but also pleistocene layers during reclamation works is closely related to occurrence of long-term non-uniform settlement after the completion of reclamation works. Since the structures constructed on man-made islands will suffer serious damage due to occurrence of such non-uniform settlement, appropriate treatments preventing the development of non-uniform settlement is required.
