NASA HANDBOOK FOR SPACECRAFT STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS TESTING

Recent advances in the area of structural dynamics andvibrations, in both methodology and capability, have thepotential to make spacecraft system testing moreeffective from technical, cost, schedule, and hardwaresafety points of view. However, application of theseadvanced test methods varies widely among the NASACenters and their contractors. Identification andrefinement of the best of these test methodologies andimplementation approaches has been an objective ofefforts by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on behalf of theNASA Office of the Chief Engineer. But to develop themost appropriate overall test program for a flightproject from the selection of advanced methodologies,as well as conventional test methods, spacecraft projectmanagers and their technical staff will need overallguidance and technical rationale. Thus, the ChiefEngineer's Office has recently tasked JPL to prepare aNASA Handbook for Spacecraft Structural DynamicsTesting. The Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) hasagreed to co-author this handbook. An outline of theproposed handbook, with a synopsis of each section,has been developed and is presented herein. Commentson the proposed handbook are solicited from thespacecraft structural dynamics testing community.
