An emerging option for the production of hydrogen from biomass is a two-step process that includes fastpyrolysis of biomass followed by gasification of pyrolysis vapors or liquids (bio-oil). Pyrolysis is used to convert biomass to a liquid that can be transported then converted to hydrogen and carbon dioxide in either centralized or distributed manner. In this work we successfully performed POX/SR of bio-oil using a fixed-bed reactor with Rh catalyst to which bio-oil was introduced as a fine mist generated by an ultrasonic nozzle. Partial oxidation tests of a 90% bio-oil, 10% methanol mixture produced syngas (CO + H_2) with the yield of about 50% of the stoichiometric potential. POX/SR produced 7.2 g hydrogen from 100 g bio-oil/methanol mixture. This yield would increase to 9.3 g/100 g bio-oil with complete water-gas shift conversion.
