This paper reports on some new procedures to assess existing constructions and to predict damage scenarios at large territorial scale. In this connection, dynamic testing is an important tool, especially if it is oriented to global dynamics and experimental modal analysis. Classical structural identification procedures, which use transfer functions, require the knowledge or a reliable measure of the forcing actions, whilst some newly developed techniques, in particular time-frequency domain ones, exploit the natural excitation any structure is subjected to, and therefore do no require any special instrumentation. Structural identification techniques can be used as direct tools for modal parameter estimates, but it is usually more meaningful to associate them with RE. models in automatic model updating procedures. Alternatively, the diagnostic problem can be reduced to the evaluation of functional symptoms reflecting the presence and the nature of the defect.
