Green Technologies for Environmental Management and Sustainable Development

Science and technology of the 20th century came as a 'mixed blessing' for mankind. It brought peace and prosperity, comfort and facility, health and wealth for mankind through rapid utilization of the natural environmental resources but also threatened the 'ecological security' of the earth due to 'over-utilization' and 'indiscriminate exploitation' of the scarce and 'non-renewable resources' with consequent damage to the ecosystem and generation of huge 'wastes and pollutants' as the by-products of development. Technocratic individualism and its economics encourage rapid use of natural resources in very 'unsustainable' manner. It is an act of violence against nature which must almost inevitably lead to violence against men in the society. Modern economists and the technocrats ignore the fact that earthly resources are 'finite' and also part of a 'closed system'.rnThere is a general belief that technologies shape and reshape civilizations. Just as natural selection pressures determine whether evolutionary experiments succeed or fail, so social selection pressures determine which technologies would come to dominate production and working pattern in the future. It is imperative, social pressure today is working towards development of 'green environmental technologies' for production and human development. Society has the power to 'accept' or 'reject' a technology.
