The goals of developing systems better,rnfaster, and cheaper continue to drive softwarernengineering practitioners and researchers to investigaternsoftware engineering methodologies. In requirementsrnengineering, the focus has been on modeling thernsoftware engineering process and products for systemsrnthat are being built from scratch. As the size andrncomplexity of systems continues to grow the use ofrncommercial off the shelf (COTS) components is beingrnviewed as a solution. Effective use of COTSrncomponents, however, requires a systematic approachrnthat provides both a set of concepts for modeling thernsubject matter and a set of guidelines for using suchrnconcepts. In particular, the process needs to recognizernand address the people oriented problems including thernidentification and resolution of conflicting goals,rnbridging the gaps between stated requirements andrn'approximately fitting' components while still satisfyingrnthe customer. In this paper, we present a goal and agentrnoriented requirements engineering process model thatrnexplicitly addresses the use of COTS components.rnMore specifically, we present (part of) our model for arnCOTS-Aware Requirements Engineering (CARE)rnprocess and illustrate it using a Digital Library System.
