摘要

It is proposed that the strain dependence recently demonstrated in rare earth doped fluorescence lifetime temperature sensors and rare earth doped fluorescence intensity ratio temperature sensors is primarily due to a strain induced, volumetric distortion of the energy transfer rates between the dopant ions. The available data are shown to be consistent with this model. Prospects for engineering temperature and strain sensors based on this modelling are discussed.
