This paper presents a novel optical instrumentation system developed for the measurement of three dimensional (3D) geometric parameters of gaseous flames. The system consists of 3 monochromatic CCD cameras, a frame grabber, and a computer with associated software. The three cameras, placed equidistant and equi-angle from each other, capture the images of the flame simultaneously. Using digital image processing techniques, the contours of the flame are extracted from the images and geometric parameters of the flame are measured, including tip, ignition point, centroid, orientation and volume. A series of experiments was conducted on a gas burner in a laboratory environment. The results show that the system is capable of measuring geometric parameters of the flame at different viewing locations and the variations of the parameters with air flow rates are observed.
