Potentials of Lonicera Japonica in Ecological Restoration of Abandoned Lands

As former energy base for Beijing City, Mentougou District suffered heavily from the coal mining and road building with large area of disturbed land. In the abandoned area, vegetation was destroyed with cover less than 5 % , decreased biodiversity and cracked landscape, which resulted in low ecosystem service. Three medicinal plant honeysuckle ( Lonicera japonica) , diploid Damaohua, tetraploid Jiufengyihao and aberrance diploid Hongyinhua, were planted in the abandoned land along road, coal mine, limekiln and quarry to restore these extremely disturbed lands in Wangping Town, Mentougou District , Beijing. Our result showed that all the three varieties were suitable for revegetation in all these four types of bandoned lands, and tetraploid Jiufengyigao may be the best one among the three honeysuckle varieties according to growth and physiological performance. We concluded that honeysuckle can be used in restoration of degraded lands for their tolerance to various stress and rapid growth.
