Poly (vinyl chloride)(PVC) is known as a notch-sensitive polymer. The addition of rubbery inclusions into a polymeric material is commonly employed to increase the toughness of polymeric materials. PVC powder is usually blended with other polymers such as CPE, NBR, MBS, ABS and ACR copolymers to improve its toughness. Emulsion polymerization is often used to prepare the toughening particles such as MBS and ACR, which typically comprise rubbery and glassy layers. However, suspension polymerization is seldom used to prepare the toughening agents. In the present work, an attempt has been made to preparing ACR-g-VC suspension copolymers, and blending them with PVC for impact modification. ACR was prepared by emulsion polymerization at 75±1℃. Suspension graft copolymerization of ACR with VC was carried out at 57±0.1℃, keeping the other reaction conditions only slightly modified in comparison with those for the polymerization of pure PVC. The dynamic mechanical and morphological studies of the graft copolymers were undertaken.
