Coloured Inversion and Seismic Blueing are processing tools that shape our seismic data spectra to be consistent with either an impedance log or reflectivity log respectively. Both tools use an exponential model for the well log amplitude spectra. This model is based on the observed behaviour of logs gathered from all over the world. Here we present a theoretical basis for this behaviour, and discuss the relationship between an exponential spectrum and a fractal or power law distribution of layer thicknesses in the log or earth. Modelling results demonstrate the relationship between the exponent of the power law (fractal order) governing the bed thickness distribution and the exponent of the corresponding spectrum.
