It is analyzed and compared various turbulence models applied to predicting strongly swirling free jets: the standard k-ε model, the modified k-s model, Reynolds stress model, etc. As far as the general solution method is concerned, the universal 3-D SIMPLE computer code is developed in rectangular coordinates and cylindrical coordinates. And which of cylindrical coordinates is applied to the simulation of 3-D non-axisymmetric strongly swirling free jets from a new type pulverized swirling combustor. Additionally, the present investigation also discusses in details the boundary conditions specification of non-axisymmetric swirling free jets. And recent experimental data on swirling free jets, obtained with hot-wire anemometer, are used to optimize the values of the turbulence model constants c_k c_3 and c_μ for swirling jets. In the end, Comparisons are present of predicted and measured results. It is found that k-ε model modified by Richardson number is an effective and economical method of predicting the strongly swirling free jets so long as the boundary conditions and the turbulence model constants are right set.
