Two novel compounds have been evaluated for spoilage control in surface coatings. These compounds are stable at high pH and are halogen and formaldehyde free. Both were evaluated in a paint using the BS 3900 G6 and BBA MOAT 33 methods. Painted substrate panels were inoculated with fungal spores and separately with algae. Compound A ― Non-leached activity was superior to the blank but slightly inferior to a commercial film fungicide. After leaching, no difference was observed between the three treatments. Compound B ― Non-leached activity against fungi was equivalent to the commercial product and both were superior to the blank. Post leaching, activity was superior to the commercial product and the blank. Algal data confirmed superior activity over the reference product and the blank.
