A neutron producing lithium target for a novel, accelerator based cancer treatment requires the removal of up to 6kW of heat produced by 1 ― 2mA beam of 2.3 ― 3.0MeV protons. This paper presents the results from computer simulations which show that, using submerged jet cooling, a solid lithium target can be maintained up to 1.6mA, and a liquid target up to 2.6mA, assuming a 3.0MeV proton beam. The predictions from the simulations are verified through the use of an experimental heat transfer test-rig and the results from a number of metallurgical studies made to select a compatible substrate material for the lithium are reported.
