As the European Commissioner responsible for energy, it gives me great pleasure to participate at this important conference. A conference which is jointly sponsored by the European Commission, under its Synergy programme of international energy co-operation, and by the State Science and Technology Commission of the People's Republic of China. I would like to begin by acknowledging the commitment of both the European and Chinese energy industries to the co-operation process, as witnessed by your participation in great numbers here today. It is of course a long way from Europe to China, but in terms of the global energy market and the environment, the world can quickly become a much smaller place.
