Chromatic dispersion is a linear effect and can be compensated. Although non-linear effects due to high-bit-rate and high-channel-count transmission systems are not correctable, they are significantly reduced by increasing the effective area of the fibre. This larger effective area also leads to a more robust optical system and potentially to network cost savings.
