The deployment of higher fibre count optical cables in Metropolitan Area Networks, has lead to the emergence of a new generation of compact cable designs. These cables are physically smaller and have been designed for ease of access. The success in the rapid deployment of compact cable designs is currently centred around the limitations of mechanical strength, gas migration and the effects of increased Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) in service. This paper considers the optimization of various compact cable designs.
