DEVELOPING COASTAL KNOWLEDGE FORRESOURCE MANAGEMENT OF NATIONAL PARKS:THE ROLE OF DR. JAMES R. ALLEN

James R. Allen died on July 30, 2002. Jim was a coastal geomorphologist in thernNational Park Service (NPS) and later in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Jim received hisrnPh.D. At Rutgers University in 1973. Early in his career, Jim taught at Northeastern Universityrnand at the University of Arkansas. In 1981 Jim began his outstanding career as a coastalrngeomorphologist with the NPS’s Northeast Region. Jim was active in the disciplines ofrngeography and geology. He had been elected to an office in the Association of AmericanrnGeographers Coastal and Marine Specialty Group and regularly presented at national andrninternational meetings. Jim authored more than 80 publications and was the principalrninvestigator on numerous coastal field experiments. One of Jim’s notable traits was the ability tornprovide scientific information for land management decisions; Jim excelled at providing a vitalrnlink between science and resource management for coastal national park managers. Jim'srnfieldwork covered many parks on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, but he had become the primaryrncoastal advisor for Cape Cod National Seashore, Fire Island National Seashore, and GatewayrnNational Recreation Area, especially Sandy Hook.
