BEACH EROSION NEAR TIDAL INLETSSELECTED CASE STUDIES ALONG SOUTHWEST FLORIDA COASTLINE

This paper presents an analysis of erosion problems near tidal inlets and discussesrnthe design and performance of erosion control structures in selected projects in SouthwestrnFlorida. The erosion control efforts included one or a combination of the following: terminalrnstructures, T-groin headlands, breakwaters, and fill placements. The paper summarizes thernregional wave climate and predominant sediment transport trends in Southwest Florida,rnpresents the analysis of the beach erosion problems associated with selected inlets, andrndescribes erosion control measures and their functional performance based on the availablernmonitoring data. The paper also emphasizes the role of integrating mathematical modelingrnwith monitoring programs for effective beach management.
