Current State of Coal Ash Utilization in Japan

Japan is one of the major coal-importing countries in the world, importing morernthan 100 types of coal every year, with some of the electric power stations using asrnmany as 20 types of coal per year. The major sources are Australia, U.S., China,rnand Indonesia. Japan's dependency on coal is expected to keep the same level inrnfuture, under to diversify energy resources in our country.rnIn order to use the coal stably, it is important to expand effective utilization of coalrnas well as to use coal cleanly and effectively. CCUJ investigates the data of coalrnash production & utilization every year. In 2002 fiscal year, about 9.2 million tons ofrncoal ash was produced in coal combustion, of which 84% was effectively used andrnthe rest was disposed. The utilization rate of cement raw material (alternative forrnclay) is 74% and cement/concrete admixture 5%, public works field 9%, andrnconstruction works field 5%, agriculture field 2%, others 6%. To use coal ash asrncement raw materials has little room to expand its quantity, therefore it is requiredrnto expand the effective utilization in cement admixture and civil engineering field.rnThis paper describes the situation coal ash production and the trend of utilization inrnJapan.
