New regulation challenges due to smart grids

The deployment of smart grid technology opens new regulation challenges. Many issues havernto be considered. For example, should the network operators be incentivized to fosterrninnovation? and develop cost effective investments? How to ensure that the pace ofrninvestments is industrially and financially sustainable for all players? and that the investmentsrnbenefit to the final consumers? How should storage regulation look like?rnGiven these questions, regulatory authorities have a major role to play in the development ofrnsmart grids. Current incentives should be reviewed and additional ones may have to berndesigned in order to enable the creation of market conditions as soon as the technology isrnmature.rnThis article tackles the main issues to be addressed by the regulator in the future.
