The sorption behavior of sodium 1-phenylazo-2-hydroxy-6-naphthalenesulfonate by a silk Gber and a nylon 6 film was investigated in the presence and absence of bolaform electrolytes. The addition of the bolaform electrolytes influenced the dye sorption and the manner of the influence was dependent on pH in the dye bath. In the case of the silk fiber, at pH3, the amounts of dye sorbed decreased slightly with increasing bolaform electrolyte concentration, while and in pure water, it increased. On the other hand, for the nylon 6 film, at pH4, it decreased slightly, whereas the manner of its change in water was dependent on the structure of the bolaform electrolytes. The sorption parameters determined from the sorption isotherms considering the dual sorption mechanism were affected by the addition of the bolaform electrolytes. Particularly, the partition coefficients for the silk fiber were significantly enhanced. This result is discussed on the basis of the sorption of the complex between the dye and the bolaform electrolytes by the silk fiber. Furthermore, in comparison with the dye sorption by the nylon 6 film, the effects of the bolaform electrolyte were found to be different between two kinds of polymers.
