This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation to develop a bio-inspired autonomous pathogen screening system that mimics the function of natural immune systems, such as white blood cells. This screening system is comprised of multiple magnetoelastic (ME) biosentinels. The sentinels are composed of a wireless magnetoelastic resonator immobilized with a bio-probe layer that captures specific target pathogens. The biosentinels are actuated, monitored, and controlled wirelessly by external magnetic fields. The autonomous sentinel system is envisioned to have the capability of seeking out invasive pathogens in liquid environments, detecting and capturing them. In the paper, the proof-in-principal of the concept of autonomous sentinels is demonstrated by comparing the response of the sentinels in dynamic and static Salmonella analytes.
