A dibenzothiophene-degrading bacterium strain Agrobacterium tumefaciens UP-3, which was isolated from oil-contaminated soil and sewage in the Shengli Oilfield, was studied in this paper. This strain cannot grow with n-dodecane,n-hexadecane, liquid olefin and naphthalene as its sole carbon and energy source. So this strain can be used in industry potentially. This bacterium can be decreased the content of DBT from 500 mg/L to 150 mg/L during 54 hours. Immobilization of the bacterium was investigated. The effects of immobilizeation conditions on the desulfurization performance of immobilized cells were reviewed. The operation time and temperature of immobilized cells were optimized. The results showed that the immobilized cells with mixture of sodium alginate(SA) and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)as the immobilized carrier had good biodesulfurization characteristics; The optimum operation immobilization conditions are 4℃, the concentration of SA being 3%(w), the concentration of PVA and SA being 7%(w), and the ratio of carriers (ml) and cells(g) being 20. When DBT addition is 2.7mM, the DBT degradation rate of immbobilized cells is above 60%. The optimum operation time and temperature of immobilized cells are 6 days and 28℃-32℃ respectively.
