Composites are lightweight and strong which makes them ideal for the push for more efficient vehicles. Composites can have better strength to weight characteristics in comparison to conventional construction materials used in the auto industry. This allows vehicles to be constructed at a lighter weight translating into better fuel efficiency and contributing to a cleaner environment. Unfortunately, due to the nature of composite materials an impact that would not be considered much of a problem with conventional metals used for automobiles could require a major repair of the composite or complete replacement. Low speed impacts can be expected during the life of the structure and may incur internal damage that is often difficult to detect and can cause severe reductions in the strength and stability of the structure.
