Electrical breakdown analysis in a sphere-plane utilizing the finite element method

In electrical systems, especially from the point of view of insulation and protection of equipment, it is very important to know which conditions will lead to the rupture of the dielectric material. Thus, tests are commonly performed in order to determine which voltage values, or which dielectric material is most suitable, for a particular equipment operate without risk of rupture. Therefore, in this work, the conditions of rupture in a sphere-plane arrangement are evaluated by varying the size of the sphere's diameter and the distance from it to the plane. The values of the breakdown voltage of the arrangement were determined by the COMSOL Multiphysics® software (which is based on the Finite Element Method for solving physical problems). The idealized study identifies which conditions are required for the occurrence of the phenomenon of electric breakdown in a sphere-plane arrangement.
