Transmission lines with half-wavelength properties are an option to current technologies for transporting large blocks of energy over long distance. This unconventional system has excellent steady state and stability properties as well as economical advantages over the transmission lines in direct current. However, nowadays there are no such lines in operation. One of the main problems discussed in the literature on the implementation of these lines is the critical faults that produce severe overvoltages. This article summarizes the main characteristics of these lines, presents a methodology for analyzing critical faults as well as possible solutions to this problem.
