Inverse sampling theorem

In site investigations which can be treated as two-dimensional, the probabilities of finding and of missing anomalous bodies in the ground of a size and shape such as is usually expected can be estimated by expanding both the probes and the site by the reversed shape of the anomalous body and considering the areas covered and left uncovered by the expanded probes. For bodies whose shapes are extraordinary, alternative methods may sometimes be required.
