摘要

There is a definite need for a broadly accepted test standard for quantitative scratch resistance evaluation for polymeric surfaces. The scratch mechanism is very complex and is test method dependent. The Texas A&M instrument provides a comprehensive study of the damages on scratched surfaces. A test procedure based on "progressive linear load increase" and "constant speed" was proposed for determining scratch visibility. A second procedure using "static load" (30N) and "constant speed" (100mm/s) was proposed for determination of coefficient of scratch friction. They both provide an accurate and comprehensive evaluation of the surface characteristics of plastics at a cost-effective manner. The two new procedures were approved by the ASTM Society and were published as Test Method D7027-05 in July (electronic copy now available from ASTM). The hardcopy will be available in the 2006 ASTM Test Method Book for Plastics.
