In the past,many automotive lighting functions have been realized by designs that statically provide specific illumination patterns.In contrast,existing adaptive designs comprise either moving shutters or electronically-complex matrix sources.In this article,we explore alternative options for a combined low-beam and high-beam out of a single LED.In order to reduce the electronic complexity and at the same time to come up with a compact LED for the light source we resort to two rows of chips arranged on a common carrier.The two rows can be independently driven.Adjacent primary optics collects the emission of the two closely-spaced chip rows and simultaneously provides a way to separate respective contributions.The subsequent secondary optics is based on conventional reflector/projector configurations to realize low-beam and high-beam distributions.In such systems,efficiency,tolerances,and system size are evaluated with respect to different primary optics based on refraction,reflection and TIR.
