INTERFERENCE OF CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM ON PLANT ELECTRICAL EARTHING

Woodside's Gas Treatment Plant on the Burrup Peninsular has underground piping/vessels protected by an impressed current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system and structures/electrical equipment protected by earth straps/rods. Initial interference surveys have been conducted which established that significant interference occurs between the two systems. Detailed results of these surveys are presented. Initial remedial work to reduce the interference has included the use of blocking devices. Further investigations and additional measures are planned, such as distributed low output protection systems to minimise potential gradients, together with ongoing identification and rectification of defective insulating flanges.
