Abstract: A short-term beam spread theory developed starting from the path integral representation of the field in random media. The new approximate formula is obtained for average short term intensity distribution. This formula takes into account all geometrical and diffraction beam parameters. Results of average short-term on- axis intensity and beam size calculations are presented. The beam parameters optimization is performed for horizontal and slant paths. The difference between short-exposure and tilt-corrected beam spread and applications of developed theory to adaptive optics problems are discussed. !16
