The effectiveness of MDAD was evaluated throughapplication to a four-story steel moment-resisting frame. In thepushover, the maximum strength and initial stiffness of the bareframe was increased by 36% and 23%, and the roof drift at firstfracture increased by 18% with the addition of MDADs. Inearthquake response analyses, the MDADs contributed toreduce the positive plastic rotations of the beams that indicateda possibility to design the MDAD based the reduction of plasticrotation. Given these positive results, the design procedures forMDADs will be discussed in the succeeding paper.
