Abstract: Extensive research of ultrashort ocular damagemechanisms has shown that less energy is required forretinal damage for pulses shorter than one nanosecond.Laser minimum visible lesion thresholds for retinaldamage from ultrashort (i.e. $LS 1 ns) laser pulsesoccur at lower energies than in the nanosecond tomicrosecond laser pulse regime. WE review the progressmade in determining the trends in retinal damage fromlaser pulses of one nanosecond to one hundredfemtoseconds in the visible and near-infraredwavelength regimes. We discuss the most likely damagemechanism(s) operative in this pulse width regime anddiscuss implications on laser safety standards.!16
