In this article a tree dimension paper model is presented. Departing from a sedimentation paper model like the KCL-PAKKA model a three-dimensional random network structure of paper is formed. Fibre flexibility, dimensions and collapsibility are introduced in the model which gives realistic predictions for many paper properties. The model is developed using a MATLAB implementation and a cellular automata framework and presents several original contributions. This paper has two main lines. First, we present a study with experimental data obtained to investigate the influence of different reinforcement pulp fibres with different biometry and coarseness on the final paper properties. An experimental design was devised in order to quantify the raw material influence, beating degree, and long fibres incorporation level on Eucalyptus globulus based paper properties. The resulting porous structure is characterized and the mechanical performance is determined. The analysis of experimental data joined with SEM photographs of the several hand sheets allowed to identify the influence of fibre flexibility, coarseness and collapsibility. In the second part the three-dimensional structure of paper is simulated using an innovating model that includes fibre lumen. The goal is to study the influence of the identified key parameters in a systematic way using a complete experimental plan design. The fibres are defined using different lumen dimensions. Results indicate that the ratio lumen fibre wall is determinant to obtain a paper simulation with the same thickness as the laboratory paper. The use of the proposed paper model reveals to be a useful tool to investigate the relative influence of fibre wall thickness, fibre flexibility and fibre collapsibility on paper properties.
