A review of the capability of the paper making process to control property variation

Robust and reliable on-line, nondestructive and continuous measurement of paper making strength properties is becoming a reality. In the light of such a significant paper making technology development it is worthwhile reviewing the findings of workers to date and evaluating the ability of current paper making control technology and processes to control the property level on the paper machine. The ability of paper makers to measure paper property in real time will place new pressure on paper machine manufacturers and control system suppliers to understand and improve control of the paper machine process. This paper reviews previous work related to paper machine paper variation and critically evaluates the ability of current process technology to substantially alter the variation performance on modern paper machines. The causes of variation are reviewed and the ability of individual process elements such as flow box settings, wet pressing, size press and pulp variation are explored. Recent results from on-line measurements are used to gauge the importance of paper property control and show the sensitivity of common paper properties to machine process setting changes.
