Research Programme: Extension of the Range of Applications for Magnesium Alloys

Light weight construction is presently one of the major issues for the transportation industry following the needs of saving natural energy resources by weight reduction. Especially magnesium and its alloys as the lightest available constructions metals have a major potential with a wide range of opportunities for the use in traffic engineering, especially in automotive and transport technology. This paper gives a general overview on the range of application of magnesium alloys and the research and development planned to extend this range. The Priority Programme InnoMagTec, as centre point of present research programmes to develop new magnesium materials and advanced processes is described in more detail.
