Special requirements exist in the food and pharmaceutical industry concerning the cleanability ofused equipment. Therefore hygienic design criteria are necessary for the design of the equipmentwhich should be adapted to the manufacturing process as well as to the product flow. It has to beproved that the product could neither get affected by another product, which is called crosscontamination,nor by material migration from machinery. These strict requirements are necessaryto guarantee high product qualities and a high level in consumer protection.One of the weak spots in the cleaning procedure is the filter media. In critical applications one wayfilters are state of the art. Sometimes it should be avoided opening the process room for changingthe filter media, for example for the manufacturing of a toxic and highly active pharmaceuticalproduct. Also for well designed equipment and machinery it is necessary to clean the filter mediadue to financial issues. Therefore a reproducible test method has been developed to determine orvalidate the degree of cleanability of filter media and to indicate areas of poor hygienic design. Thistest method can be transferred to other kinds of filter media.
