This paper traces the development of the design and construction of embankment dams. Such dams have been built by mankind for over six millennia and will certainly continue to be built in the next millennium; however, it is only in the last century and particularly in the latter part of the century, that we have developed an understanding of the key factors which govern their behaviour. The history of embankment dams and their construction is reviewed and the evolution of critical design criteria is discussed.
