Testing forms the basis of design in geotechnical engineering, as a solution to a problem in geotechnics requires an evaluation of material properties. Sometimes, the evaluation can be based on experience with a similar soil or rock together with knowledge of the site geology. Typically, however, laboratory or field testing is necessary to determine material parameters. Constitutive models and failure criteria applicable to geomaterials are reviewed and novel tests to measure material response are highlighted. These non-traditional methods include (a) estimation of elastic parameters from bender element testing; and (b) assessment of dilatancy, friction, and softening from plane-strain testing. An application of the plane strain experiment involves a slope stability case study, where propagation of the slip plane was identified. Plane strain testing provides the necessary material properties for analysis.
