EVIDENCED BASED PATIENT HANDLING: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

This paper will present a systematic literature review on patient handling activities. It reports selected findings from the search results of over 1,000 papers. Patient handling activities, as primary or secondary tasks, are carried out by staff throughout the health care industry. Over the last 20 years a number of guidance publications have been published. These have been used operationally throughout the health care industry to guide clinical practice, and additionally as reference texts for expert opinion in legal proceedings. To date there has been no substantial review that places the advice about patient handling techniques and equipment in the context of research rather than expert opinion or anecdote.
