In traditional model test, the soil deformation around the pile is difficult to obtain under soil lateral movement. Therefore, a series of model tests based on the combination of transparent soil model testing technique and particle image velocimetry (PIV) were carried out to measure the soil deformation in a non-intrusive way. The results indicate that shielding effect, i.e. soil displacement difference between the back and side of the pile, is becoming more obvious with embedment depth. The displacement difference of the soil in front of the pile is less than the soil behind the pile at different buried pile depths.
