California’s record-dry conditions in recent years have placed drought response as a top priority of thernState, giving renewed impetus for State legislators and regulators to identify and remove potentialrnbarriers to using recycled water and to expedite regulations for groundwater recharge projects usingrnrecycled water (hereinafter, GWR projects). A notable drought response includes the State’s recentrnadoption of the GWR regulations, which have been in a draft format for decades. This paper highlightsrnthe first indirect potable groundwater recharge project in the State to implement the latest GWRrnregulations, specifically by examining the validation process the project recently completed torndemonstrate that the multi-barrier approach used to produce the project’s advanced treated recycledrnwater achieves pathogen levels below the tolerable risk levels for drinking water.
