Rumors regarding problems and failures with initial start-up and testing of many low pressure membrane systems have been widespread over the past decade. Reported problems of MF/UF installations have included a broad spectrum of issues including, under-sized membrane capacity, membrane fiber breakage, potting failures, hydraulic problems, longer system downtime, under-sized ancillary equipment, membrane integrity testing challenges, higher O&M costs, and various other challenges. This paper surveys a number of MF/UF membrane systems across North America and presents the findings of the problems that have occurred in the initial stages of operation, following startup and testing. This paper also discusses why low-pressure MF/UF membrane systems have had problems in the initial stages of operation, following startup and testing. The paper reviews the results and provides an evaluation of what can be done in the future to limit potential downfalls and pitfalls in membrane system piloting, design, construction and startup to make sure that when the system is started and operated, it meets all requirements set forth during design and system procurement.rnThis paper is not intended to point out the problems or to assign blame, but rather to evaluate how we can move forward with the technology and how we can address any problems or issues facing the technology. There is no doubt low pressure membranes offer tremendous promise to utilities facing challenging conditions, such as water quality, available space, capital as well O&M cost and others.
