Virtual radars allow users to benefit from some of the advantages of ADS-B coverage while utilizing existing automation systems and procedures. Used in airspaces where the aircraft are broadcasting ADS-B data, the reports can be reformatted and processed to emulate the characteristics of traditional radars allowing the use of existing automation systems that haven't been updated to handle the new surveillance format. The disadvantages of the virtual radar approach is that one can't take advantage of the improved accuracy as the update rate for the position is still reported only once every 12 seconds, and the improved resolution of the position reports cannot be utilized.
