HEALTH EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH AIR POLLUTION IN THE URAL MOUNTAINS

People in the regions around Magnitogorsk and, in general, the Ural Mountains continue to be exposed to environmental risk factors that impact their health. Despite ongoing efforts by local health agencies, it appears that public health in the Magnitogorsk and Ural Mountains areas is still deteriorating due, in part, to the recent collapse of the Soviet economy and political fabric. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop provided an opportunity for local and foreign experts to apply their collective wisdom to the environmental crisis in Magnitogorsk and other mining towns of the Urals. A number of recommendations have been made with the understanding that the over-arching economic problems must also be addressed to guarantee improvements in human and ecosystem health.
