The metal finshing and printed wire board industries use many processes that utilizes hazardous chemicals. Examples of these chemicals include solfuric and chrome acids, cynaide complex, sodium hydroxide, formaldehyde, and ammonium hydroxide. There is a strong interest in evaluating the fate of chemicals in the environment and in assessing their impact on humans. Unfortuanately, toxicity studies are sometimes not available, or data may be inadequate. This data is necessary to recognize problem chemicals, to identify safer substitutes or other options that would lower the risk, prevent pollution, and reduce environmental management costs. This motivated a strong interest in developing tools to predict chemical risk based on the structure activity relationship (SAR) of the chemical.
